Happy birthday, ol' geezer

Homemade ice cream cake...Emily and Sam helped
(Sam said, "My present to dad is all my hard work on THIS!"

So Dan decided HIS present was to load the dishwasher!
Zane says, "I never asked for a naked girl at my party, and yet, here she is!"
Teehee. She did put on her princess dress for the presents though.

Note to self

"Habits...the only reason they persist is that they are offering some satisfaction...You allow them to persist by not seeking any other, better form of satisfying the same needs. Every habit, good or bad, is acquired and learned in the same way - by finding that it is a means of satisfaction." Juliene Berk

Bre's birthday!

Dan says:

Gingerbread men throw up chocolate chips.

I've never heard that before in my life, but he tells me it's from Shrek the Third. Which he hasn't even seen! lol

Did you know...it was Autism Pride day?

I didn't, until about fifteen minutes ago. It was then that my 13 year old approached me and said proudly "Today is autism pride day! Did you know?" Having several kids on the spectrum, I'm somewhat disappointed in myself lol!

Back to Josh. He has always been proud of his diagnosis, and he's one of the guys who says "I'm autistic," not "I have autism". He resents that autism is presented as a disease, after all, it's not contagious, has no mechanism for transfer between people. He also told me years ago that if Zane and I died, that he would gladly take care of Breanna, because "No one else will understand her like I do."

His brain does work differently, as does Breanna's, but they are both such gifts to the planet. I think the first aspect of that gift is that people need to stop looking at what's wrong, and see what's right.

Water day!

My first attempt at water balloons. The kids had fun, once we decided we cannot throw them at people. For some reason they wouldn't pop. For some reason we kept trying on Josh lol!

And the sprinkler was fun, Avari would not change. She had to play IN her long pajamas. Wet clothes would make me queasy, but she had a great time.

Ava's pet balloon, she was horrified that everyone else was throwing them. And breaking them, of all things!

Sam wouldn't let me take a picture of it, but he was doing cartwheels over the sprinkler. He did say I could take a picture of him BY the sprinkler. teehee

Ever wished you had pictures?

Earlier we had four girls, in a row, on computers....all doing webkins together. It was so awesomely cute, watching them get on the same server, finding each other, etc. Now they are painting t-shirts to make nightshirts. In the meantime, Avari is opening every stamp pad and licking them to see if they work. teehee! I *could* get the camera, but it changes the entire atmosphere (ha, spelled that one three times before it looked right) of the room, so I'm just skipping it and letting you imagine.

Dan is playing hotwheels on Josh's laptop, and Sam is playing Star Wars Lego on their computer. Josh is folding clean clothes (of his own volition I might add...but I think that he is trying to make me happy as Rock Band for the Wii is coming out this weekend) I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get up and make corn bread from scratch, or if I can just oil and garlic some old hot dog buns for garlic bread. We did make the chili from scratch, and we made wheat free brownies and a chocolate chip cookie cake at kitchen creations, so I think i did my baking for the day.

I'm such a child myself...

is it bad to stomp your feet and scream if a kid (unknown as of now, probably Ava) messes up the screen on your brand new laptop? I was so furious, ready to kill really, so I'm upstairs trying to burn off some steam before I go downstairs and try to love them to sleep.

The big sleep if I don't control my temper.

Speaking of feelings, just read "The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things" on the advice of my teen friend Savannah. Broke my heart and healed it up nicely. Makes me want to dye my hair purple, and get a tongue ring, just to stick out at my mom. Reminds me of my teenage years...all the angst and pain and how my parents were. Wonder where I got my anger management issues?

Things that Rock

Norman Public Library. Picture is Dan and Rachel, in the now wheat-cleaned section

.

We had an issue yesterday. Number one serious issue, in that my youngest boy cannot have wheat. Can't eat it, can't bath in it, can't play with it, cannot touch it. Next to the youngest shouldn't have any. And when we walked into the library, there were smooshed up snacks all over the floor. Looked like cheezits to me. Now, we're used to using wet wipes to clean off the keyboards (note to self, bring our own dang keyboard next time, duh...why didn't I think of that before?) and we usually clean off the trains, blocks, dinosaurs, etc that he's going to play with. But frickin crackers everywhere...that's just crazy talk. Not only does it absorb through his skin and make him sick, but if he touches it and rubs his face, we're talking rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, excruciating leg pains at 2am, headaches, learning difficulties.

I know little kids get hungry, and need a snack, but why *in* the library? There's a great lobby to step into, chairs and all, to have a snack. And a handy dandy sign that says "No Food or Drink in Library". And why so many that they feel the urge to smash them into the chairs and carpet? Give them one or two at a time, and when they lose interest in eating and start smashing, there aren't nearly so many to smash. Anyway, note to those, please consider food allergies in these situations!

Anyhoo, long and short of it is, that Dan and Sam couldn't play in the library. They couldn't go to the picture books because they would have had to trek through crumbs. I cleaned off the back computer and one of the chess sets and set them up in the back, and then asked Ms Susan for help. She was swamped, so i did the unthinkable. I asked the custodian for help lol! that's just my issue, he's such a busy guy...I hate to bother him. But when I explained what had happened and our issues, he didn't fuss. He didn't frown. He didn't give me a hard time, or say 'later', or anything. He went back, got cleaners, cleaned off the chairs, nearby tables, and vacuumed half the kids section. Afterwards, he shook my hand and thanked me for letting him know...and when the boys came over and said Thanks, he was all smiles.

He had lots of questions, for which he apologized. He said he didn't want to seem offensive, but was genuinely curious about celiac disease. And then he asked if I was the mom of the girl...you know, that one. He asked if she had autism, and he had a dozen good questions about autism, causation AND he knew about Nick's Law and what a travesty it was to not pass.

Thanks Michael, and thanks NPL, for helping all kids access their resources.
