Scripture for Saturday...

The point of Saturday Scriptures is to record a verse, for myself, to ponder over the weekend. You are welcome to join me. Ultimately my goal is to memorize these verses to have as a resource in my daily life. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee" (Psalms 119:11)

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy”- Ephesians 5:25

most noncon Christians wash over this part of Ephesians, mostly because they carry a deal of embarrassment or anger on wifely submission. I'm sure the anglican church hasn't said anything about it lately lol! I am not even looking at that this coming week, even if I feel that there is a great deal to be said about a relationship in which one can give up having power (husband or wife, I like to think we both submit to each other in the matters that are important) In fact, i guess I will say that verse 22 and 23 refer to the way the church serves Christ. Does Christ expect us to question him on everything? Or does he say, here are the rules, Love God, love your neighbor.? Everything falls into those two (Luke 10:22 I think) For the conservatives who interpret the verse that way, I ask you to consider this. Christ asks us to do everything to serve his purpose. Not bring him his shoes and dinner in front of the TV. Not to give up control over the checkbook or maintenance, but in a manner that brings glory to HIM. To do things that bring glory to your husband. Call the insurance company about the roof, if that's what he needs. Proverbs 31 states that the good wife not only feeds and clothes her own household, she buys her own property, buys her own stocks, invests in vineyards! No one should interpret the submissive wife as one who has been cowed or had her freedom removed!

But the above verse is one that I think most people don't consider. Reading this gives me chills, because Paul is saying that every husband should love his wife so much that he is willing to DIE for her, regardless of the state of her perfection. If you believe that Christ died for all, even in a sinful state, then you are called to lay aside your problems with your wife and forgive her in as much as Christ forgave you. In doing so, you sanctify your wife! Holding a grudge, grumbling about missing a game when she asks that you share time with the family, working late...all of these things go against biblical callings for the husband.

As partners, these two things should not feel onerous. It should feel like you're friends, willing to give a bit to each other, and support each other, cleaved into one flesh. 'And they'll know we are Christians by our love, by our love...yes they'll know we are Christians BY OUR LOVE'

Diane...alternatively, we sing "all you need is love (duhduhdumdeeduh)! all you need is love, love...love is all you need!"etc

This one was random though. Usually I follow the lectionary or wherever my brain is taking me. this was the verse of the day from biblegateway dot com. Not the interpretation, though. I take all the blame for that one. Some say I'm a heathen.
