The miracle of the season...

Today I was talking to my friend Laura about the song, Mary Did You Know. I'm such a wreck at Christmas time, and even more so last year when I was huge pregnant. The beauty of the music, with the beauty of the story, fills my soul every year. I think this is one of my favorite songs, primarily because it addresses the fact that Mary was told that she was giving birth to a special baby. But did she ever know really how special He was supposed to be until the day he died? Can you imagine being told your baby would do all these wonderful things? It says in Luke chapter two that Mary "treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart."

Like every mother, she wondered what her son would do with his life. We all ponder the greatness of our children, born with unspeakable potential. And it seems to me that one particular line of this song, has been true of my children, most especially MY firstborn. Specifically, "This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you." We are all delivered by our children, turned from one person into another by the presence of God in our lives, a gift that was given us without having to earn it. I prefer the Kenny Rogers/Wynnona Judd version , his voice just tends to lend itself to the questioning, reverential tone.

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will one day walk on water?

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?

Did you know,
that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered,
will soon deliver you.

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?

Mary, did you know
your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?

Did you know,
that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little baby,
you've kissed the face of God.

The blind will see
The deaf will hear
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?

Mary, did you know
that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?

Did you know,
that your baby boy is heaven's perfect lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding, is the great I AM.

Me and my baby boy...

That song always brings me to tears. I have a version of it on a children's CD where it's a little girl's voice singing it. So powerful.

Lovely photo!
